Latitude Chair
Type: Lounge Chair Status: Completed 2016 Scope: Brown American Ash + Nylon Webbing Despite existing as a finished project, this chair serves as a tool for the dual exploration of body support and the manufacturing process. The profile of the chair was developed in tandem with a team through an exploratory prototyping process that reacted to the needs for support and comfort among a group of similarly heighted people. From there, this data was extrapolated to form the contour into a two part seat and ottoman configuration. Once developed, bent wood lamination emerged as the ideal process for assembling a form with such curvature. Through an iterative process of testing geometry in drawing and manufacturing, a final form emerged. Simultaneously, an investigation into the seating surface began to take place. Due to the curvature, typical upholstery was out of the question. Due to its reflexive nature and ability to navigate curvature, webbing emerged as the final material. The final chair is comprised of Brown American Ash, Gray Nylon Webbing, and Stainless Steel Fasteners. |
